The track serves as the theme tune for TV show Slow Horses, a fresh Apple Original series centring around the cold, cunning and corrupt underbelly of MI5.
Jangly guitars and echoing harmonicas create a soundscape highly reminiscent of a Western shoot-out. The sly drawl of Jagger’s distinct vocals, paired with that distinct, rock ‘n’ roll swagger matches the thick, brooding atmosphere of the track flawlessly. It’s like listening to a cowboy strutting through the saloon doors, dead-set on proving that “this town ain’t big enough for the two of us.”
‘Strange Game’s heavily cinematic feel is undoubtedly amplified by the involvement of film composer Daniel Pemberton. Having co-written the track, it makes sense why the single captures such a distinct, Western feel – and the tone perfectly reflects the deceitful world of espionage that Slow Horses aims to explore.
Based on a series of acclaimed books by Mick Herron and starring Gary Oldman, the first two episodes of Slow Horses are out now on Apple TV+.
